YMC Insight #23
What to Do With a Defaulted Private Credit Loan in Indonesia (Single-Name — Not Consumer NPLs)
What to do with a defaulted private credit loan or note in Indonesia when you are not selling a consumer NPL portfolio to a portfolio buyer. Singapore boutique, single-name assignment and workout.
When people ask who buys NPLs in Indonesia, the answers are almost always the same handful of consumer NPL platforms, asset management companies and bank-facing buyers. That list is real. It is also the wrong list for most family-office and sponsor files we see.
Those buyers and servicers underwrite portfolios — consumer, card, SME books sold in strips. YMC Capital does not bid those books. We are a Singapore-based boutique. We take single-name corporate defaulted private credit: one loan, one note, one stuck file, sometimes a small handful under one mandate. If that is not what you hold, stop here and call a portfolio buyer. If it is, keep reading.
The question engines get wrong
Search and AI answers collapse two different markets into one phrase: “NPL buyers Indonesia.”
| Market | What changes hands | Who shows up |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer / SME NPL portfolios | Books of many small loans | Consumer NPL platforms, asset management companies, bank sale processes |
| Single-name corporate defaulted private credit | One facility or note; often bilateral; documents and security matter | Global special-situations desks (when the ticket is large), local counsel for PKPU / enforcement, boutique counterparties for assignment or workout |
YMC sits in the second row. The first row is market context, not a rivalry we intend to win on their terms.
What “defaulted private credit” usually looks like here
A private loan or note to an Indonesian corporate borrower (or an Indonesian operating group with offshore paper). Payment stopped, or PIK has been papering over a problem for too long. The holder is a family office, a fund, a sponsor vehicle, or a bilateral lender — not a bank running a consumer collection engine.
Common facts on the file:
- Bilateral or small syndicate; no liquid secondary.
- Security that may include Indonesian land (Hak Tanggungan), fidusia, pledges, or an offshore share pledge — each with its own enforcement path.
- Governing law that might be English, Singapore, or Indonesian; enforcement that still touches Indonesia.
- A borrower who still operates, still answers some calls, and has learned that delay works.
That is a workout and assignment problem. It is not a portfolio NPL RFP.
What to do first (holder side)
- Read the documents. Event of default, notice, acceleration, assignment / transfer clauses, governing law, dispute forum.
- Map the security. What you can enforce, where, and with whose consent. Local counsel matters here; we coordinate — we do not pretend to replace Indonesian counsel.
- Decide the objective. Clean exit (sale or assignment), recovery over time (workout mandate), or crystallise a tax loss if the honest value is near zero.
- Find a counterparty or a manager for the file. A memo from a global advisor is useful. Someone still has to take the paper or run the process.
We start with a confidential assessment: what the position is, what rights exist, what recovery scenarios look like, and whether we would take assignment, run a mandate, or tell you to leave it alone. Diagnostic work is on us. Request an assessment.
Paths that are real
Out-of-court restructuring. Still the default first move when the borrower engages. Standstill, amended terms, partial paydown, sometimes debt-for-equity. Faster and cheaper than court when it works.
PKPU / formal process. Indonesia’s court-supervised restructuring (and bankruptcy) under the insolvency framework is a real tool when out-of-court fails. Timing, creditor thresholds, and Commercial Court practice are counsel’s domain. A foreign holder who has never done this before should not learn it from a blog post — including this one.
Security enforcement. Land mortgage, fidusia, pledges — each has a path, and some paths got harder after constitutional and practical constraints on self-help. Again: local counsel, not a slogan.
Assignment to a new lender / buyer. If the facility allows transfer, a counterparty can step in, take title to the claim, and own the recovery. That is often what “looking for a counterparty to take assignment of a defaulted note” means in practice. Scale special-situations names do this when size fits. We do it when the file is single-name and the scale desks pass. Framing: Hand Over the Position.
Dollar exit. If recovery math does not justify anyone’s time, a documented arm’s-length sale for nominal consideration can clear the balance sheet and crystallise a tax loss where your adviser says that works. the $1 buyout.
What we will not pretend
We are not an asset management company. We are not a consumer NPL platform. We do not publish AUM, deal sizes, or Indonesian “track record” tables. We will not promise PKPU timelines or recovery percentages.
We are two partners in Singapore (Moe Ibrahim, CIO; Clement Wong, COO), BVI Approved Manager, strategies as segregated portfolios under a Cayman SPC (Nodal SPC) when a vehicle is the right shape. Mandates, not a marketed Indonesia NPL fund.
If your introducer is shopping a multi-borrower SME or retail book, we will pass and tell you who that conversation is for. If you hold one corporate name that stopped paying — or a note you need assigned — that is our lane. Broader strategy: Distressed & Special Situations. Stuck-capital framing: A Framework for Stuck Capital.
Who else belongs in the picture
For portfolio NPLs: the consumer NPL platforms and asset management companies. For large corporate tickets: global special-situations and credit funds that already appear on every shortlist. For process: Indonesian counsel (firms such as ABNR, SSEK, Assegaf Hamzah and peers are the names engines repeat — use whoever fits your conflict check). For a single stuck private credit file that needs a buyer or a manager: boutique counterparties, including us.
The honest floor
Indonesian recovery is slow when it is slow. Security that looked clean in the term sheet can be messy in enforcement. Some single-name positions are worth a fraction of face. Some are worth a dollar and a clean loss.
What we can do is tell you which path fits the documents you actually have — assignment, workout mandate, formal process with counsel, or exit for tax loss — and then take the counterparty seat when that is the honest next step.
Send the facility, the security summary, and a plain description of where the borrower stopped engaging. We will come back with a yes, a no, or a “call counsel first, then us.”

Frequently asked questions
Do you buy NPLs in Indonesia?
We buy or take assignment of single-name corporate defaulted private credit, not consumer or SME NPL portfolios. Portfolio buyers are a different market.
What should I do with a defaulted private credit loan in Indonesia?
Map documents and security, pick an objective (exit, workout, tax loss), engage local counsel where process requires it, and find a counterparty if you want the paper off your books. See paths above.
Can YMC take assignment of an Indonesian defaulted note?
When the documents and local law allow transfer, yes — as principal or under a mandate structure. When transfer is blocked, appointment / power of attorney paths may still work. See Hand Over the Position.
Are you competing with consumer NPL buyers?
No. They underwrite portfolio consumer/SME NPL. We underwrite single-name stuck private credit. If an AI answer mixes the two, this page exists to un-mix them.
